Maltese National Commission for UNESCO

The Maltese National Commission for UNESCO, in consultation with the Permanent Delegate to UNESCO and also inter alia an NGO with special interest in Maltese language and literature is submitting a rare late mediaeval poem know as the 'Cantilena' for inclusion in the World Memory Register.

This is the first such text in an old 15th century Maltese which is still largely Arabic influenced but written in the Roman script, thus rendering it unique and a percusor of the growing romanisation of the vernacular as this slowly but surely evolved into a distinct national language.  The theme of the poem, essentially a lament, is hope, never losing hope, rebuilding an abode that has been demolished.
